I have, over the years, been in awe at the form, colours and design of feathers and marvelled at nature’s capacity to amaze through ‘wondrous variety’. Whilst I often paint and draw wildlife it wasn’t until 2018 that I decided to paint on a feather and once started I was hooked. Generally I paint on feathers found whilst walking the dog around the Tamar Valley. Firstly, the feathers are cleaned and the barbs re-hooked. I paint a variety of animals on the feathers using the shape of the feather to define the shape of the animal painted on it. I regularly use my own photographs as aids when creating these, often, miniature paintings. It has taken me time to perfect the skill of painting on feathers and the lockdown period provided me with the opportunity to practice the art. Each painting is unique, often because of the way the feather reacts whilst being painted on. Since the lockdown I have sought to develop my skills in painting and drawing on larger, more traditional, surfaces. I am excited to continue developing skills that will help me to become a better artist.
