As a youngster I loved art and, consequently, went on to study Art as my main subject at teacher training college, painting and print making. I then took evening classes in pottery.
5 years later I took a job teaching English in Chofu Japan. After a few weeks of teaching I visited Wado Gama in the grounds of the Kakuonji, a Bhuddhist temple. As part of the temple complex there was a well-known pottery with a Korean climbing kiln. Within a year I was a full-time apprentice under the guidance of Mr. Fujimoto.
In 1978 after 2 years in Japan I returned to the West country and continued with my pottery full-time as an apprentice with Michael Leach, son of the famous Bernard Leach (in St. Ives), at Yelland Pottery near Bideford.
The next 2 years while there I continued to learn new skills including throwing in the opposite direction from Japan.
After 2 years I left Yelland Pottery, got a teaching job in Camborne College and bought a cottage with a barn. Hence, I was able to start doing my pottery with a gas bottled kiln put in the old pig shed. A friend in the wood work department at the college built me a Leach kick wheel. On top of that I taught adult pottery evening classes twice a week in Truro. I sold locally as well as doing markets in Truro.
Since 1987, when I married, I have lived in the USA, New Zealand, Cornwall, Singapore, the Peak district, Korea, and now back in the West Country in Latchley. There were some places where it was not possible to set up a pottery but in NZ and the Peak district, I was able to establish a small pottery. I have now permanently settled and set up my pottery workshop in a very old stone out building. My trusty Leach wheel is still with me but I only have a small top loading electric kiln. So now I feel that I am picking up the baton again!
